Staining and Finishing Technician (Tech II)
The Furniture Staining and Finishing Technician (Tech II) is responsible for applying finishes and stains to furniture, enhancing its appearance and protecting it from wear. This involves selecting appropriate stains and finishes, preparing surfaces, and applying them using various techniques while adhering to safety protocols and maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
Responsibilities
Surface Preparation: Inspect and prepare furniture surfaces for finishing, including sanding, filling imperfections, and ensuring a smooth and even base. This may involve working with pieces that have already been prepped/stripped.
Stain Selection and Application: Select and mix appropriate stains to achieve the desired color and tone, applying them evenly and consistently using brushes, rags, or spray equipment.
Finish Application: Apply various finishes, such as lacquer, varnish, polyurethane, shellac, and oil, using appropriate techniques to achieve the desired sheen and durability. This includes understanding the properties of different finishes and their application methods.
Color Matching: Match existing finishes and stains to ensure consistency and maintain the original appearance of furniture pieces.
Repair Minor Damages: Repair minor structural damages such as scratches, dents, and chips using wood fillers, touch-up markers, and other appropriate materials.
Material Selection: Select and use appropriate stains, finishes, fillers, and other materials based on the type of wood, desired outcome, and project requirements.
Safety Procedures: Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures, including proper handling of chemicals, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
Quality Control: Inspect finished furniture to ensure it meets quality standards and customer expectations.
Inventory Management: Maintain inventory of finishing supplies, tools, and equipment, and notify supervisor of any needed replacements or orders.
Workspace Maintenance: Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of hazards.
Documentation: Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on each project. (Optional)
Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other team members, including prep technicians, upholsterers, and customer service representatives. (Optional)
Qualifications
Proven experience as a Furniture Refinishing and Staining Technician or in a related field.
Knowledge of different wood types, finishes, staining techniques, and color matching.
Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and spray equipment safely and effectively.
Ability to assess furniture for damage and determine appropriate repair and finishing methods.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Excellent color perception and matching skills.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Ability to lift and move furniture pieces.
Understanding of safety protocols and procedures related to handling chemicals and power equipment.
