Stripping and Preparation Technician (Tech I)
The Furniture Stripping and Preparation Technician (Tech I) is responsible for preparing furniture for refinishing or upholstery by removing existing finishes, repairing minor damages, and ensuring surfaces are properly prepared. This involves using various stripping methods, hand tools, and power equipment while adhering to safety protocols and maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
Responsibilities
Stripping Furniture: Safely and effectively remove existing paint, varnish, stain, and other finishes from furniture using appropriate chemical strippers, hand tools (scrapers, sandpaper, etc.), and power tools (sanders, etc.).
Surface Preparation: Clean and prepare furniture surfaces for refinishing or upholstery, including sanding, filling imperfections, and ensuring a smooth and even finish.
Repair Minor Damages: Repair minor structural damages such as loose joints, chips, and dents using wood fillers, adhesives, and other appropriate materials.
Material Selection: Select and use appropriate stripping agents, solvents, fillers, and other materials based on the type of wood, finish, and desired outcome.
Safety Procedures: Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures, including proper handling of chemicals, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
Quality Control: Inspect prepared furniture to ensure it meets quality standards and is ready for the next stage of the restoration or finishing process.
Inventory Management: Maintain inventory of stripping supplies, tools, and equipment, and notify supervisor of any needed replacements or orders.
Workspace Maintenance: Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of hazards.
Documentation: Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on each project. (Optional)
Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other team members, including refinishers, upholsterers, and customer service representatives. (Optional)
Qualifications
Proven experience as a Furniture Prep and Stripping Technician or in a related field.
Knowledge of different wood types, finishes, and stripping techniques.
Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and chemical strippers safely and effectively.
Ability to assess furniture for damage and determine appropriate repair methods.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
Ability to lift and move furniture pieces.
Understanding of safety protocols and procedures related to handling chemicals and power equipment.
